Printing is an essential part of daily work flow. Dornsife Technology Services knows the importance of printing and has configured the network printers in such a way that you can easily locate the network printer you want to use and quickly set it up. But from time-to-time, something may go wrong in the printing process. This document will help you identify what the printing issue is and help you resolve it.
Review the following information after you have verified that you have added the printer to your computer correctly by reviewing the printer add instructions.
I clicked the print option but nothing happened.
If you clicked the print option but your the document did not print, check the following items:
- Verify that the printer is powered on
- If this is a networked printer, verify that co-workers are able to print successfully to the same printer
- If you are on campus, verify that you are on Ethernet or USC Secure Wireless
- If you are off campus, verify that you are connected to the USC network via VPN
- Restart your computer and attempt to print the document again
I added the printer but I am receiving a message that says “hold for authentication.” What does that mean?
“Hold for authentication” means that the print server is awaiting your username and password to verify your access to the printer you are attempting to use. The username and password being requested in your Dornsife Account. . The username is the portion of your email address that is before the @ symbol. If you changed your NetID password or Dornsife Account password on or after March 11, 2019, your two passwords are now synchronized to be a single password. If you have not changed either of your passwords on or after March 11, 2019, then you still have two separate passwords.
Additionally, you may receive the “hold for authentication” message if your Dornsife Account was created less than 24 hours ago. You should be able to print on the day after your Dornsife Account was created.
