If you’ve recently purchased a new computer, you may want to transfer the information and data from your old computer to your new one. There are two ways that Dornsife Technology Services (DTS) can assist with transferring your data from your old computer to your new computer.
- Cloud Storage: DTS strongly recommends the use of a cloud storage provider. USC has multiple approved cloud storage options. Cloud storage provides the ability to access your files from any device with an internet connection. It eliminates the need to move files from computer-to-computer. It also provides you with a secure backup of your files. All drives can and will fail at some point. If your data is only in one place, on a physical hard drive, the chance of data loss is great. In addition to hard drive failure, computers and devices can be lost or stolen, making the data irretrievable.
Cloud storage only takes a few minutes to install and setup. Most cloud storage providers offer a syncing tool that automatically syncs your data to the cloud. We can assist with the installation and training for any of the USC approved cloud storage options. DTS is happy to discuss the different cloud storage options with you and then make a recommendation based on your needs.
- Traditional File Transfer: If you would like a transfer of the data from an old computer to a new computer, DTS can assist with that. We will need both computers for a minimum of 3 days. Data transfers can take a long time, depending on the amount of data to be transferred. The 3 day minimum provides enough time for us to move the data onto the new computer and address any transfer failures that may occur.
